We don’t want our gear crapping out on us any more than you do, because we rely on it in the backcountry too. So we handpick only top-shelf outdoor gear and apparel to sell to you. And because technology evolves, so do we, staying current with the newest and best gear without ignoring proven brands and technology.
We’ve been called a lot of names – enthusiasts, gearheads, outdoor junkies, etc. The point is, like you, we’re passionate about the outdoors. So we’ll give you honest, experienced answers to your gear and outdoor questions – questions we understand, because we’ve been there.
Good gear ain’t cheap, but not everyone’s on that Pablo Escobar how-many-pet-jaguars-is-too-many level. We get that. So we price our gear and apparel with everyday folks in mind. We also offer alternative payment options like Blispay financing, allowing you to spread out your purchase (so you’re not forced to splash your entire next paycheck on that new board) as well as our No Hassle 365 Return Policy if you need to return your purchase.
We’ve focused on quality gear since we started, shortly after WWII, when father-and-son duo Jacob and Sam Solomon started U.S. Army Surplus Store in Portland, Oregon. Surplus stores are awesome (seriously, who doesn’t love paracord and ammo cans?), but the family soon started carrying ski gear and outdoor apparel, becoming U.S. Outdoor Store in 1957 with the goal of outfitting outdoor enthusiasts in the area. (Goodbye, ammo cans.)
For decades, the Solomon’s ran U.S. Outdoor Store, moving into the iconic downtown Portland location in 1986, helping enthusiasts gear up and enjoy everything the outdoors has to offer. The shop’s reach went international in 1996 when USOUTDOOR.com became the first online presence by an outdoor shop. (Our online paracord sales may be limited, but we’ve still got all the other outdoor gear you need.)
Through several generations of Solomons and a huge online expansion, U.S. Outdoor has remained committed to maintaining the in-person expertise and familiarity of a local shop. When Ed and Carrie Ariniello bought the shop from Rob Solomon in 2017, allowing him to retire, they proudly maintained the locally-owned and family-run culture that has distinguished U.S. Outdoor for over six decades, bringing their own lifetime of outdoor passion and expertise to the shop.
